College of Counselling Studies New England North West

The College provides quality Counselling Training in the New England/North West of NSW.

The College began in 1985 under an initiative of the Armidale Anglican Diocese who employed Miss Lois Reid to conduct counselling training. Over 500 students have studied with the college. Many are employed in local welfare services and counselling centres throughout NSW and interstate

The College is a distance education provider based in Tamworth and serving the New England/North West region of New South Wales. The College allows local people, who understand local issues, to study and then counsel in their local communities. The training encompasses a number of counselling modalities that enable graduates to work with a range of clients: couples, families and children.

Although previously offering both Bachelor and Diploma Degrees, changes in Higher Education Board requirements resulted in adapting the course to an 8 module Diploma course which meets the requirements of ASQA (Australian Skills Quality Authority, formerly VETAB). Presently, the College is working in a partnership arrangement with TAFE New England Institute(RTO number 90001)to offer the Nationally Accredited Diploma of Counselling from the Community Services Training Package CHC08. Students will be enrolled through the College of Counselling Studies
with TAFE.

Training emphasizes supervised practice sessions. offered at weekends or as 2-3 day blocks in a number of centres throughout the region. Flexible entry times allow students to fit their study program into the demands of their lifestyle.

In keeping with our philosophy of meeting the needs of rural clients, there is an emphasis on Rural and Remote Counselling and Cultural Awareness within a Christian framework. Although we have a background in Christian counselling , it is not a course requirement to be a practicing Christian.
